I have attempted various maps in the past to explore the idea of “how China sees the world,” but this design had two specific inspirations: Richard Edes Harrison and a dusty, unused stack of legal-size paper. The 8.5”x14” sheet allows a substantially larger map surface than letter-size sheets, but is widely available and feeds through any printer. These sheets proved well-suited to emulating Harrison’s practice of multiple oblique views, showing part of the globe from different (often reversed) perspectives. Stacking multiple views on the same theme help the user quickly develop new perspectives. I sought to use this composite of images to offer new perspectives on China’s place in the world and how China “sees” the world outside its borders.
