In the course of a few map projects for Palgrave and Georgetown, I have been trying to imitate a style that many French cartographers have adopted to display data across the whole world. In many cases, these inventive projections work better than Robinson or Goode. I have settled on a special case of the Wagner IV projection. Two examples here: Global Precipitation and Global "Human Footprint."
The NASA human footprint data layer is really interesting and captures more than just population density (but I don't know why it omits Moldova and leaves it looking like a lake).
